The old timer who corrected my mortar mix at a job in Akron
I was mixing 4 parts sand to 1 part cement and he walked over, said that's too rich for this cold weather, and had me swap in a shovel of lime. He explained it stops the cracking when temps drop below 40 at night, and I've used it every pour since. Anyone else run into a guy who just knows by feel?

My uncle poured concrete for 40 years in Ohio and he swore by a handful of dish soap in the mix for cold pours. Said it keeps the water from crystallizing. Never saw it in any book but his driveways still look good.
