Watched a 78 year old bind a book with thread and a bone folder at the Ohio fair and ditched my glue pot
I was at the Ohio State Fair back in 2019 just killing time in the craft barn when I saw this older guy named Walt doing a demo at a little folding table. He had maybe 40 people crowded around watching him sew a signature with nothing but linen thread, a needle, and a bone folder he said he got in 1971. Before that I had been gluing my spines for about 4 years because it was fast and I was impatient. Walt passed a finished book around and the thing laid flat on its own, no cracking, and I just stood there feeling dumb about my shelf of glued-up bricks. Took me about 3 months of practice before my stitching stopped looking like a spider got loose in there, but now I sew almost everything over 60 pages. Curious if anyone else made the switch after seeing it done in person, or did you all start out sewing from day one?
A 78 year old with a bone folder from 1971 convinced you to change your whole setup? That's a nice story but honestly glue has held up fine for plenty of people, a fair demo doesn't mean your old books were junk.
