That chapter count stat in my book club's spreadsheet blew my mind
I run the stats for our book club and last Tuesday I put together a simple chart of chapter lengths for the books we read this year. We did 7 books and I found out that the average chapter in our mystery picks was 11 pages, but the literary fiction ones averaged 18 pages. What surprised me was that our discussions about pacing always matched those numbers, yet nobody had ever said anything about chapter length being the reason. I only noticed because I was tallying page counts for our annual reading challenge and decided to split it by chapter for fun. It made me wonder if a book with short chapters feels faster even when the total page count is identical. Has anyone else looked at chapter stats for their club picks and seen a pattern in how the group reacts?

Did those short chapters actually change how fast everyone finished the book?
