Small win: Got my book club to see the gray area in the main character's big choice.

Oh man, we just have a soft spot for messy choices I guess. We talked about how the character's own terrible past meant she never learned a better way to handle things. And the "good" option would have meant leaving her sister totally helpless. So it felt less like a evil plan and more like the only bad door she saw in a room full of worse ones. But hey, my judgment is also why I tried to fix a garbage disposal with a butter knife last year.

Disagree honestly, felt like a pretty clear cut bad call to me. What made your club see the gray?

Yeah but focusing only on her reasons ignores the real harm she caused. The show went out of its way to show how many people got hurt by that choice. She had other paths, they were just harder for her personally. Framing it as the only option feels like letting the character off the hook. Honestly, that's what makes it a bad call for me, not a gray one.
