My book club fought for 20 minutes over whether the dad in Room was a good father
I said he was doing his best with what he had and my friend Dana looked at me and said 'he still chose to keep his kid in that shed.' I've read that book twice and never once thought about it from that angle, and now our next meeting is a whole thing. Anyone else have a club pick where one comment flipped how you saw the entire book?
This happened to my club last March with The Kite Runner. We were maybe fifteen minutes into talking about Amir and everyone was being pretty easy on him, and then Carol, who almost never talks, said something about how he had a chance to speak up in that alley and chose not to. Nobody said a word for a minute. I had read that book in college and cried at the end, and suddenly I was sitting there feeling like I had missed the whole point. Carol just shrugged and said she thought that was the real story, not the redemption part. We spent the next hour rehashing everything and half the group changed their minds about him.
