Hardcover vs. paperback for group reads, the library hold list settled it
My book club in Portland spent 45 minutes debating whether monthly picks land better in hardcover or paperback, and the answer turned out to be whichever one the library has 12 copies of, since three of our eight members only read if they can get it free, has anyone else had a pick derailed by wait times?

Man, library wait times have killed two of our picks this year alone. We tried switching to "whatever's on the shelf" for a few months and that went bad too, we ended up reading some real junk just because 8 copies were available. What finally worked was picking the book six weeks out and having everyone put their holds in that same week, so the whole group moves up the list together. Our library lets you freeze a hold too, which helps if someone's copy comes in too early. It's a little bit of planning ahead but way less arguing than the hardcover vs paperback thing.
