DAE remember when our book club fought over a single word for 2 hours?
Back in 2019 our group in Ann Arbor spent an entire meeting arguing about whether the author meant "happy" or "content" in one line of The Remains of the Day. We actually hit the 2 hour mark and had to skip the last 40 pages because nobody could move on. Now we meet over video and finish in 45 minutes flat, and honestly I miss the mess. Does anyone else feel like book talks got shorter once we stopped meeting in person?
Sat through something like that in a pizza shop once, four of us going back and forth about one sentence in Slaughterhouse-Five. Kurt said Billy was "unstuck" in time, Jake said he was just plain crazy, and we spent an hour on it while the guy behind the counter kept staring at us. We never did settle it, and I still bring it up at parties when I want to watch people get mad. Video calls kind of kill that vibe, because somebody can just mute themselves and check out. In person you had to sit there and take it, and that made people care more.
