That old boilermaker from Local 74 set me straight on weld preheat

Ran into a retired guy named Frank at the supply house last week. He watched me grab a preheat setup for some 2 inch plate and just said "you're burning money if you're heating the whole thing." He showed me how he used to run a torch just along the weld zone back in the 70s. Been doing it his way for a week now, gas bill dropped by half. Any of you old-timers still preheat like that or am I missing something?

Haha my uncle used to say the same thing about heating concrete before pouring in winter. Guy swore by just warming the ground where the pour was going instead of tenting the whole site. Gas bill's gotta be brutal these days lol.

Man your uncle had the right idea, I tried that one winter and saved a ton on propane compared to tenting the whole slab.
