Spent $180 on a fancy fume extractor, went back to my old fan setup

Bought that expensive portable fume extractor for welding in my garage shop in Tulsa, it barely pulled smoke from 2 feet away. My old $40 box fan with a furnace filter does a better job, anyone else get burned by these overpriced units?

Is it really that big of a deal though? I mean, you still got smoke out of your garage, right? Those portable units are hit or miss, but sometimes people expect way too much from them. The box fan trick has been around forever for a reason, it just works. Maybe you just got a lemon, or maybe the hype got you, but I wouldn't lose sleep over it.
