Overheard an old-timer at the hall change my mind on those pre-ground welding rods
He said he saw three guys fail a bend test last month using them because the flux was too dry, so I'm switching back to cutting my own rods for the big jobs.

Pre-ground rods turned my last weld into modern art.

Man those pre-ground rods are a total gamble. I've had them turn a clean bead into something that looks like squiggly spaghetti, all because the tip was uneven from the start. One time I tried to fix it mid-weld and just made a bigger mess, ended up with a globby mess that looked like a bird nest. It's frustrating because you think you're saving time but really you're just setting yourself up for more cleanup.
