Heard a young fitter say welding is easy, had to bite my tongue

I mean, this kid was maybe 22, watched a few videos and figured laying beads is the whole job. I didn't say much, but it got me thinking about how much of this trade is the stuff you never see, like fitting tolerances and knowing when to stop and let metal cool in 90 degree heat. The last big job we did outside of Pittsburgh, the prep time on the joints was triple what the actual welding took. Has anyone else noticed the younger guys skipping the basics and going straight for the machine settings?
