The guy who brought a 15-page house rule sheet to Catan night.

Last Friday at a meetup in Austin a dude showed up with a binder full of custom rules for Catan. Took us 40 minutes just to explain the resource tax on harbors before we ditched him and played base game.

Right, the 40 minute resource tax on harbors bit. That tells me he probably had a whole paragraph on how many sheep it costs to dock a boat, like it was a real port authority fee. I bet his rule sheet had a section called "Diplomatic Immunity" where you could trade a monopoly card to avoid paying the tax, which just sounds like a way to argue for another 20 minutes. And of course he'd insist you read the "Core Principles" page first, which was just his manifesto about how the base game is broken. By the time you get to the part about roads costing two bricks and a diplomatic favor, you're already looking at your watch hoping someone's phone rings.

Ha, @jamiew53 you're making me laugh because I've literally been in that exact situation. The "Core Principles" page is always the worst part, it's like he wrote a thesis on why trading sheep is a metaphor for global economics. I swear the last time I sat through one of those rule explanations, I started mentally planning my grocery list just to stay awake. And of course he'd get huffy if you tried to skip to the actual gameplay, like you were breaking some sacred oath. Anyone ever actually make it through a whole game with that ruleset without someone just giving up and offering to buy pizza?
