Shoutout to my buddy for the game room reno, but our lighting fight is real

We finally cleared out the basement to make a dedicated board game spot. I'm all for bright overhead lights so we can see the cards and pieces clearly. He says moody, soft lamps make it cozier and less like a clinic. Honestly, I feel it hurts gameplay, but he won't budge. Where do you stand on lighting for your gaming tables?

Honestly, I'm with you on the bright lights. Trying to read tiny text on cards under a dim lamp is a pain. It's not just about seeing pieces, it's about avoiding eye strain during long games. What kind of games do you guys play most often? If it's heavy strategy games with lots of components, good light is key. Soft lighting might be cozy for hanging out, but it can really hurt gameplay when you need to focus. Has your friend ever played in a well-lit game room versus a dim one? The difference is huge.

Yeah I always used to think dim lights were fine for game nights... but @hayes.joel is totally right about the eye strain thing. I spent a whole game squinting at tiny resource cards and got a headache. Now I get why proper light matters.

Oh man, @murphy.zara, I feel you on that. I've gotten headaches from squinting at cards in bad light too. Good lighting saves game night from being a struggle.

Glare from lights on shiny game cards is a huge problem that gets overlooked. It can make text blurry and cause just as much eye strain as low light, ngl. Positioning lamps to the side instead of directly above helps reduce those harsh reflections. Using bulbs with a softer diffused light rather than clear ones can also make a big difference. Once you fix the glare, reading those tiny resource cards becomes way easier.
