Had to choose between reading the rulebook or just winging it with Settlers of Catan

My group got together last Saturday and I'd never played Catan before, so I skimmed the rules for like 5 minutes then decided to just learn as we went. I ended up blocking my own road by accident and got laughed at for 20 minutes straight. How do you guys handle learning new games, read every detail or just jump in?

Did you ever hear about my buddy Dave who tried to learn Cosmic Encounter in about 30 seconds? He spent the whole night giving other players powers they didn't even have, and by the end nobody knew who was winning or losing. Honestly, sometimes jumping in blind makes for the best memories even if the game gets wrecked.

In my experience, skipping the instructions with board games is basically like trying to assemble furniture without the manual. You end up with extra pieces and a lot of frustration, but at least the stories are gold.
