The $3 lens cleaning trick that saved my vacation photos

I went to the Grand Canyon last spring and every single shot looked like fog rolling in. I was about to blame my phone camera until my buddy wiped his lens with his shirt and handed it back. The difference was night and day just from some pocket lint and sunscreen smudges. Now I keep a little microfiber cloth in my wallet and swipe my lens before any important shot. Has anyone else messed up a whole trip album because of a dirty lens?

Actually, keeping that cloth in your wallet grinds sand into the lens from all that pocket lint.

Hang on, wouldn't the sand in the pocket be more of a problem for the phone screen and the card slot than for a cloth that's meant to be wiped off anyway? Like, I get the point about not wanting grit on the lens, but that same lint is also grinding into your cards and the phone's back glass, right? Isn't the real risk just having a dirty pocket in the first place, no matter what you're storing in there?
