Night shift at the aquarium finally taught me how to shoot in the dark
I work the 10 PM to 6 AM shift at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and last week I kept getting these awful blurry shots of the jellyfish tank. One of the old-timers said to switch my phone to pro mode and bump the ISO to 1600, then hold my elbows against the rail for support. It worked way better than I expected, so now I'm wondering what everyone else does for low light situations at like concerts or kids' events, any tricks that beat just cranking the brightness?

The "elbows against the rail" tip is honestly the real secret to everything, not just photos... I mean think about it, standing still is half the battle in any dark room. I've noticed people at concerts are always moving or bouncing around and then wonder why their shots look like ghosts. But the bigger pattern I see is that everyone thinks tech can fix a lack of patience, so they just crank the brightness and get washed out messes instead of steadying up. Once you learn to brace yourself and slow down, it changes how you see the whole shot, not just the exposure. That old timer probably knows a hundred tricks like that, and they all come down to just being a little more deliberate with your body.
