My cousin thinks he can fix his own bottom bracket without the right tools

He brought over his bike yesterday, all loose and making noises. I tried to explain why he needs a crank puller, but he just shrugged it off. Now I'm worried he'll strip the threads or worse... What's the best way to get through to someone like that?

Dealing with that kind of stubbornness is a REAL headache. My buddy once tried to force his crank arm and ended up needing a WHOLE new bottom bracket shell. It's so hard to explain why proper tools matter without sounding like a know-it-all. Maybe show him a video of what happens when threads get stripped?

That stubborn mindset shows up everywhere, not just with bikes. People skip the right steps to save five minutes, then waste hours fixing the mess. It's a weird kind of short-term thinking that costs more in the end.

I read a blog post from a bike mechanic who said most home repairs fail without proper tools. He described a guy who used a hammer on his bottom bracket and cracked the frame. The repair cost ended up being more than a new bike. That mechanic always keeps a stripped shell in his shop to show customers. It's a ugly piece of metal with ruined threads. Maybe show your cousin that story or find a similar picture online?
