Saw a guy at the farmer's market compost his leftover corn husks and it hit me how much food waste I make
I was standing at the compost bin behind the greenmarket in Brooklyn last Saturday watching this man toss in a full bag of scraps and now I'm finally setting up my own bin after years of thinking it was too much work, has anyone else had a moment like that where a stranger's simple act made you rethink your whole routine?

Feeling like it's too much work" is literally where I was for years too, I thought it'd be stinky and attract bugs. Then my neighbor showed me his simple bin setup behind the garage and it clicked how easy it actually is. Deadass changed my whole mindset on food scraps overnight.

A countertop bucket with a tight lid and some carbon material like shredded paper makes all the difference, no smell or bugs if you layer right. @davis.adam is right that seeing someone else's simple setup shows how little effort it actually takes once you stop overthinking it. Just grab a small bin, toss in browns with your greens, and dump it weekly to break that mental block for good.

Do you actually track how much waste you're keeping out of the landfill, or do you just eyeball it and hope for the best? I started weighing my scraps a few months back and it really hit me hard to see how much I used to just toss. It's one thing to say you're composting, another to see the numbers pile up week after week. Curious how many people here actually measure that stuff or if it's more of a relax and let it happen thing.
