Just found out my coffee maker was costing me $60 a year in electricity
I was messing around with a kill-a-watt meter last weekend and tested my old Mr. Coffee 12-cup. It uses 900 watts even when just keeping the carafe warm. That little heating plate running 4 hours a day adds up to about $62 per year on my electric bill. Has anyone else checked their appliances and found a hidden energy hog like that?

Yeah so @ryan369 you reminded me, I plugged in my phone charger the other day and it was pulling like 2 watts with nothing even plugged into it. Over a year that's like 17 bucks or something dumb. But honestly the biggest shocker for me was my cable box, that thing is always hot to the touch even when I'm not watching it.

Did you check your standby power for other small appliances too?

Have you ever noticed how standby power adds up across the whole house though? @ryan369 I started paying attention to this a few years back and it's wild how many little things are always sipping juice. Like my coffee maker, the microwave clock, the TV that's "off" but still glowing red. It feels like a hidden tax on every outlet. I finally got one of those kill-a-watt meters and plugged in everything I could think of. The numbers weren't huge for any one thing, but added up it was like having a light bulb on all the time in every room. That's the pattern I've seen - it's never just one culprit, it's the silent army of them.
