PSA: A vendor at the Raleigh flea market taught me the $2 trick for spotting real silver
I was digging through a $5 junk box at the Raleigh flea market last Saturday when an older vendor leaned over and told me to check the inside of ring bands for a tiny stamp that says 925 or sterling. I had no clue that stamp meant real silver, and I have passed over who knows how many real pieces because I only looked at the outside. I grabbed a tarnished spoon from his box, flipped it over, and sure enough there was the 925 mark, so I paid $2 for something worth way more. Now I carry a little magnet in my pocket too, since he said real silver will not stick to it. Has anyone else learned a quick test like this from a seller who was way too nice about it?
Did the vendor say anything about the magnet failing on plated stuff that has a steel core? Curious if that test actually works on the tarnished junk most of us dig through.
