Passed on a $15 cast iron at a garage sale in Tucson, grabbed the $3 one instead, and now I get why
Honestly I hit a neighborhood sale in Tucson last Saturday and saw two cast iron skillets on the same table. The $15 one was shiny and smooth but felt weirdly light in my hand. The $3 one was crusty and black, like somebody's grandma cooked with it for 40 years. I walked around the block thinking about it, came back, and the cheap one was still sitting there. Took it home, scrubbed it with steel wool and hot water for about 20 minutes, reseasoned it twice, and now eggs slide around like nothing. The heavy one had a rough pebbly surface that I bet would have taken months to smooth out, and the weight told me the metal was thinner. Tbh I almost grabbed the pretty one just because it looked nicer. Does anybody else check the weight of cast iron before buying, or am I overthinking this?
