That old barber at the shop in Austin changed my mind about using thinning shears

He just stopped mid-cut and said, "you're taking out texture, not bulk, kid" and handed me a regular comb. Now I barely touch them unless it's for a soft crown blend - has anyone else been burned by overusing thinning shears?

Tell me if your barber ever explained how to actually see the difference between bulk and texture in the hair. I feel like that's the missing piece for most people who grab thinning shears. Would love to know what specific visual cue he pointed out to you.

My barber in Denver told me the same thing three years ago. Showed me how texturizing shears just chew up the hair if you go at it wrong. I still own a pair for the nape area, but regular scissors handle everything else better.
