My birthday cake for my niece collapsed in the middle of the party

I was making a two-tier chocolate cake for my niece's 7th birthday in my apartment kitchen. The bottom layer just sank in the center after I pulled it out, probably because I opened the oven door too early. I ended up cutting out the middle and filling it with extra frosting and berries, which everyone loved. Has anyone else fixed a major cake fail on the spot like that?
