Knew my stand mixer was dying, took 4 hours to diagnose the real issue
My KitchenAid started making this grinding noise last weekend. Spent 2 hours replacing the worm gear, still sounded like rocks in a blender. Turns out it was just a loose screw on the mixer arm that took 10 seconds to fix. Has anyone else spent a whole afternoon tracking down something that simple?

Man, that is brutal. I totally feel your pain on this one. How many times have we all just ripped things apart for no reason? I once swapped out a perfectly good motherboard because of a loose fan cable. It's maddening when the simple fix hides from you for hours. The grinding must have been a real gut punch after doing all that worm gear work. At least now you know your mixer inside and out though, right?

I've got to disagree, spending hours on something dumb teaches you way more than a quick fix ever will.

Ruby, I see your point about learning more from the long route, but that's kind of like saying you learn more about cars by changing a perfectly good alternator before realizing the battery was just loose. Knowing your mixer inside out is fine, but I'd rather have that knowledge come from a planned deep clean, not from chasing a ghost. All that worm gear work just gave me practice I didn't need while the real fix sat there waiting.
