Warning: microwave popcorn gave me a REAL scare last night

I always thought the recommended cook time on the bag was just a suggestion, push it a minute or two for extra crunch. Then I read a news article about how the fire department got called to 3 apartment fires in my town this year alone from people overcooking popcorn bags. Apparently the smoke can set off every alarm in the building and even warp your microwave door. I actually sat there watching the timer hit zero and saw a wisp of smoke curl out before I opened it. Has anyone else had a close call with a burnt bag of popcorn?

Warping the microwave door? That's terrifying, I didn't even know that could happen from burnt popcorn. My old microwave had a weird dent in the door frame and I always wondered how it got there, now I'm pretty sure it was from my college roommate's midnight snack disasters. Definitely never pushing the timer past zero again after hearing that.

My buddy actually melted a plastic spatula trying to scrape out a blackened bag once, took him forever to get the smell out of his kitchen lol
