Appreciation post: my car died on I-5 near Bakersfield last Tuesday, and it turned into one of the best weeks I have had all year
Here is the thing I want to argue about. Some folks say a car breaking down is just bad luck and nothing else. I say it depends on how you handle it.
Last Tuesday my car quit on I-5 outside Bakersfield around 6pm. I sat on the shoulder for 2 hours waiting for a tow to Buttonwillow. Cost me $310. Total pain.
But while I waited, the guy in the truck behind me handed me a cold Gatorade and we ended up talking for 40 minutes about his grandkids. Then my neighbor picked me up at 11pm with zero complaints. Then my boss let me work from home the rest of the week and I got more done than I have in a month.
So which is it? Is a breakdown a bad day that ruined my week, or did it actually make my week better because of the people who showed up?
I honestly think we argue about this wrong. We rate a day by the thing that went wrong instead of the people who helped. My week was a 10 out of 10 and it started with a dead alternator.
Where do you all land on this? Do you count a rough day by what broke, or by how people showed up?
Man, this reminds me of when my flight got cancelled and I ended up sharing a rental car with two strangers who turned into legit friends. Sometimes the worst plans lead to the best stories, you know?
