PSA: The community garden downtown has a new way to fight slugs

I was at the Riverfront Community Garden yesterday, just looking at their raised beds. I noticed they had these little plastic cups sunk into the soil next to their lettuce. Turns out, they're filled with cheap beer. The volunteer there said the slugs crawl in for a drink and drown. It's way cheaper than buying slug pellets, and it seems to be working. Their greens looked totally untouched. I'm going to try it tonight with a can of the cheap stuff from my fridge. Has anyone else used this trick, and does the brand of beer matter at all?

What kind of beer did they use? Cheap lager works best, the slugs don't care about quality.

Actually, I've had way better luck with a darker ale. The stronger smell seems to draw them in from farther away. Cheap lager just doesn't have the same pull in my garden. It might save a few cents, but if it doesn't work as well, you're just wasting money. I want the slugs gone, so I use what actually catches them.

My neighbor's fancy IPA just made drunk, happy slugs.
