IMO, companion planting is hype for backyard veggies.
I tried it with my tomatoes and beans, but saw no real benefit. Just extra work for the same harvest.

Yeah, what about the combos that actually do something though? Faith_carter is right about marigolds, I've seen those little orange flowers wreck aphid populations. But my favorite is planting radishes right next to my squash, the radishes get eaten by borers instead so the squash plants live. I mean, some pairs are just busywork, but others feel like a real plant cheat code when you find the right one.

Marigolds wrecking aphids was my first real proof this works.

Whoa now, hold up. You might have just picked a pair that doesn't do much (tomatoes and beans are kinda meh together). Try tomatoes with basil right next to them, the flavor actually gets better. Or plant marigolds all around your veggies, those things really do keep bad bugs away so you don't need spray. It's not just hype if you use the right combos.
