A nursery worker in Bakersfield said something that got me checking my plants

I was buying tomato starts last weekend and the guy helping me said, 'I've seen three people this month bring in plants with early blight from contaminated potting soil bags.' He told me to always check the bag for small tears or if it looks like it was stored outside in the rain. I went home and checked my own stash, and sure enough, one bag I got on sale had a tiny hole in the bottom. Has anyone else had soil go bad on them like this?

My neighbor lost her whole herb garden to a torn bag last year.

Sounds like a made-up scare story to me.
