Old timer told me to ditch my GPS for a paper map on the JMT

Met this guy at a resupply in Tuolumne Meadows who said he's been hiking the Sierra since the 70s. He told me my GPS would die by day three and I'd be lost... sure enough, battery crapped out near Donohue Pass. Had to rely on a crumpled Tom Harrison map I bought at the last minute, and honestly I covered way more ground without staring at a screen.

Totally agree, man. I did the JMT in 2021 and my Garmin died on the second morning near Island Pass, ended up using a phone backup that had zero service half the time. Once I switched to a paper map I stopped obsessing over mileage and just started paying attention to the actual trail and the views, which made the whole trip way better honestly.

stopped obsessing over mileage" is the real hack right there, tech just gets in the way.
