Saw a guy take 14 samples from the cheese lady at Whole Foods on a Saturday and I still cringe thinking about it
Last Saturday at the Whole Foods on Lamar in Austin, I watched a man in a cycling jersey work through basically the entire cheese counter. He asked the lady behind the glass to cut him a piece of at least 14 different cheeses, one at a time, over about 20 minutes while a line of 8 of us just stood there. Every single time she handed him a sample he would sniff it, tilt his head, and say 'hmm, not quite' like he was judging wine at a vineyard. When he finally got to the last one he said 'I think I'll just grab the cheddar' and pointed at a $6 block of Tillamook. The cheese lady's face did this slow blink thing and the guy behind me whispered 'sir, this is not a tasting menu.' I felt so bad for her that I bought a $22 wedge of gruyere I didn't even need just to break the tension. Has anyone else seen a sample situation go that far, or did I witness a one of a kind event?
The HEB on Mueller has a sample guy who gives out tiny cups of salsa and I watched a woman ask for 9 cups in a row, saying she needed to compare heat levels before buying. The guy just kept handing them over with a frozen smile. I finally said loud enough for her to hear that the salsa was 2 for 5 bucks and she grabbed one jar and left. Next time just buy the cheap cheese and hand it to the lady, that works better than the gruyere move.
