Swore off reman alternators for 6 years, then a 2011 Civic changed my mind
I used to refuse reman alternators, always pushed customers toward new ones after getting burned twice back in 2018. A guy rolled into my bay in Mesa with a dead charging system and only $180 to spend, so I put in a reman from a rebuild shop I trust. That was 14 months ago and he came back for an oil change with the same unit still pushing 14.2 volts. I pulled it and cracked the case out of curiosity, windings and bearings looked clean. Now I'm wondering if my grudge was really about the part or about the cheap rebuilders I dealt with back then. Any of you got a reman brand you actually trust, or am I fooling myself?
Wait, 14.2 volts and you actually cracked it open just to look? That's the part blowing my mind right now, most remans I've seen die at the 8 to 10 month mark, right after the warranty runs out, so a clean 14 months is nuts. You yanked it off a running car for science and the windings were still good. Maybe the real problem back then was just the shop doing the rebuild and not the idea of a reman at all.
