I was using the wrong size socket on my impact wrench for years
I was swapping out a water pump on a 2012 F-150 last week and kept rounding off the same bolt. My buddy Mike walked over, looked at my 3/8-inch impact, and just said, 'You know that's a 1/2-inch drive bolt, right?' I'd been using an adapter the whole time without realizing it was causing the wobble. Have any of you had a basic tool mistake that took way too long to figure out?

It's amazing how often we fight the tool instead of the actual problem.

That's a classic move right there. I spent a whole weekend convinced my ratchet was broken before I realized the little lever was set to tighten, not loosen. Felt like a real genius. Some days the tool is fine, it's the operator that's faulty.
