I thought those magnetic oil drain plugs were just a gimmick until a customer's engine told a different story

A regular came in for an oil change on his 2015 Silverado with 120k miles, and he'd installed a Fumoto valve with a magnet. When we pulled it, the magnet was covered in a fine gray paste of metal particles. It wasn't a lot, but it was consistent wear we wouldn't have seen otherwise. It convinced me there's some value in catching that stuff before it circulates. Has anyone else seen a case where a magnetic plug gave you an early warning sign?

It's funny how the smallest things can show a bigger problem. That gray paste is a quiet story of normal wear, but catching it early is key. It reminds me of checking smoke alarm batteries, a simple habit that prevents a bigger disaster. Do you find most people ignore these small maintenance steps until it's too late?

That "simple habit" idea is spot on. I feel like our brains are wired to ignore tiny, boring tasks until they scream at us. It's why my oil change sticker is two months out of date right now.

Yeah, that "quiet story of normal wear" is more like the engine's passive aggressive way of leaving a note. "Hey, just slowly grinding myself into a fine metallic paste, no big deal, lol." It's wild that we need a magnet to catch the evidence, like the truck is trying to hide its crimes.
