So magnets always work perfectly for that? What about all the times they don't pick up the exact bolt because it's stuck under something non-metal? Seems like they just grab every random bit of metal trash in the area too. You end up with a magnet full of old washers and nails instead of what you actually dropped. Feels like basic eyesight and patience does a better job most of the time. They're just an extra tool that gets hyped up way too much.

Exactly! Magnets do tend to grab all sorts of metal junk. It's annoying when you're just looking for one specific bolt. I've had times where the magnet picked up everything but what I needed. Then you have to clean off all that trash, which adds more work. Plus, if the bolt is stuck under something non-metal, the magnet is useless anyway. Sometimes just getting down and looking carefully is faster and less messy.
