My buddy thought I could fix his bumper with duct tape and a prayer
I had to break it to him that it takes more than that. We had a good laugh about it after.

Sure it holds for a bit, but that's a temporary fix at best. Eventually the adhesive fails and you're left with a bigger mess. Calling that a real repair is just kidding yourself.

Actually, duct tape and a prayer can do more than you think. That stuff is crazy strong and handles rain just fine. I've kept bumpers on with tape for longer than I'd admit. A little hope goes a long way when you're in a bind. It's a fast and free fix that gets you down the road. Lots of repairs are overkill for what you really need.
