Just realized spraying primer at 3 coats instead of 2 cut my sanding time in half
I had a 2014 Silverado front clip in the booth last Tuesday and decided to lay down 3 wet coats of epoxy primer instead of my usual 2. I figured I would just block it flat and be done, but what happened was the extra build let me sand with 320 straight off and skip the 220 step completely. Ended up saving close to 40 minutes on that one panel and the finish came out flatter than anything I have turned out in months. Has anyone else gone heavier on primer coats to save sanding time, or am I just getting lazy with my blocking?
The build thickness thing makes sense but nobody talks about what it does to your gun setup. Three wet coats of epoxy means you are pushing way more material through the tip, and if you are not running a bigger nozzle or bumping your pressure you end up with orange peel that eats the time you saved. Curious what tip size you were spraying with, because 1.4 is going to struggle laying down 3 wet coats without some texture. Also worth watching your flash times between coats, epoxy gets soft if you pile it on too fast and then it clogs paper instead of sanding clean. You are not getting lazy, you just found the build window that works for your shop temp.
