That waitress at the Varsity gave me the real deal about my job hunt
Last Tuesday I was eating a chili dog at the Varsity on North Avenue and the waitress, Maria, saw me staring at my phone between applications. She said, 'You keep refreshing that screen like it's gonna get you hired, hon, go talk to a person.' She told me how she got her job there by walking in and asking for the manager, not sending a resume online. Has anyone else had better luck with in-person applications than online ones in this city?

Maria's advice is solid, but that part about walking in and asking for the manager isn't the whole story anymore. Most places, especially bigger chains like the Varsity, have a set way they hire people now and the manager will just point you to a computer in the back. I've seen guys do the walk-in thing at restaurants and end up filling out the same online form on a tablet right there. It can still help to show your face, but it's more about getting your name remembered after you apply, not skipping the online part. Online apps are the main door, but shaking a hand can get you moved up the pile. Just don't expect to hand a paper resume to a manager and walk out with a schedule.
