Got a quote for $800 to fix my hot water heater, fixed it myself for $40

My water heater went out last Tuesday morning. No hot water before work is a rough way to start the day. Called three plumbers in Decatur and the cheapest quote was $800 just to replace the heating element. Watched a YouTube video from a guy named Mark in Alabama who showed the whole thing in 12 minutes. Bought the part at Ace Hardware for $12 and a $28 socket wrench set I didn't have. Took me 45 minutes and my hands were shaking the whole time but it worked. Anyone else find that plumber prices have gotten insane lately?

Bet it was just a bad limit switch or something simple though. Plumbers gotta pay for that shiny truck somehow.

Did you see that report from a few months back about how some companies are actually adding fake diagnostic codes to their equipment on purpose? Makes you wonder.
