Warning: Those cheap dimmer switches will wreck your LED bulbs

I put in a $6 dimmer from the hardware store in my living room last January. By March, three of my LED bulbs started flickering and one died completely. An electrician friend told me the old dimmer wasn't designed for LED loads and was sending the wrong voltage to the bulbs. Has anyone else lost bulbs to a bad dimmer match?
