TIL that old guy at the hardware store actually knew his stuff about paint brushes

I was buying a cheap 2 inch brush for a cabinet job and this guy in his 70s stopped me. He said that one would leave streaks no matter what and pointed me to a Purdy with natural bristles. Cost me $18 instead of $4 but the finish came out smooth on my first coat. Has anyone else gotten good advice from random strangers in those aisles?

That same guy probably helped me pick out paint for a fence once.

My neighbor Dave once spent 45 minutes helping me match a stain for a deck that I ended up painting over six months later anyway. He had this whole system with little wood swatches and a flashlight, like he was diagnosing a disease or something. I kept thinking "just grab the one that says cedar" but he was dead set on finding the perfect shade of greyish brown. Eventually I just nodded and agreed to whatever he pointed at, and you know what, it looked fine. I swear some people just really get into that stuff, like picking colors is their version of a hobby. So yeah, I get that whole "that same guy" feeling for sure.
