That $400 air purifier I bought for pollen season - lifesaver or money pit?

I dropped $400 on a Dyson air purifier three months ago because my allergies were brutal, and it legit cleared up my morning sneezing fits. But my neighbor swears by a $60 box fan with a furnace filter taped to it and says I got ripped off. Who's had the cheaper setup actually work long term?

Right? The box fan hack works surprisingly well, saved me from dropping real cash.

Mine doubled my electric bill first month so check that before trying it.

Yeah, but that hack only works if you already own a box fan. I bought a cheap one from a garage sale and it's been running nonstop for two years now. @jessica_robinson23 did you have to modify yours to get the temp right or did it just work out of the box? I swear some of these hacks only work if you already have the right setup at home. Just asking because I'm tired of trying things that end up costing more than a real solution.
