TIL that putting a spoon in an open wine bottle doesn't keep it fresh

I had a half bottle of red left over from dinner last Friday, and I stuck a metal spoon in the neck like my grandma always did. Woke up Saturday morning, took a sip, and it tasted like vinegar. Apparently the spoon trick is a total myth, the cold metal does nothing to stop oxidation. Has anyone else fallen for this old wives' tale or is there actually a cheap way to keep wine good for a few days?

My best friend tried the spoon trick once. Ruined a perfectly good merlot.

Laughing at that because it's so true. The spoon trick is supposed to catch the steam and keep your wine from spilling, but it honestly just turns into a mess most of the time. I've seen people try it with red wine, and the spoon drips all over the tablecloth. Plus, if you're not careful, the spoon clangs against the glass and makes that annoying noise. It's one of those tricks that sounds smart in theory but falls apart in real life. Better to just pour a smaller amount and drink it faster, if you ask me.
