Rant: Everyone says to call a plumber for a clog, but I fixed mine with a $5 tool from the hardware store.
My kitchen sink in Austin backed up last Tuesday, and I used a simple hand auger after watching a YouTube video. Has anyone else tried this instead of paying for a service call?

Patriciah51 is right, just pull the trap first and you'll save yourself a huge mess.

Totally did that last month. Saved a hundred bucks on a service fee. That little plastic drain snake is a lifesaver.

Patriciah51 has the right idea. I keep one of those hand augers under the sink next to the drain cleaner I never use anymore. The real trick is pulling the trap off first, it makes the whole job a lot less messy. Most clogs are right there anyway, and you avoid pushing the gunk further down the line.
