Warning: fieldwalking grids changed after a site in Dorset got missed
Used to walk 20 meter transects with just a compass and pacing. Last year we surveyed a pasture near Dorchester and a whole flint scatter sat between two of my lines. Now I map every transect with a GPS unit and overlap by 5 meters. Took about twice as long on the next site but we found 3 times the artifacts. Anyone else had a grid spacing fail like this?

Learned that lesson the hard way with a Bronze Age pit. Overlap is where it's at now, even if my legs hate me for it.
