The painted sign at Tikal that changed how I read glyphs
On my trip to Tikal last spring, I noticed the site museum had a replica stela with paint still visible, and the guard told me most people miss the original pigment traces on the actual stones. I started looking closer at the shaded areas of the carvings, and suddenly I could see red and blue remnants that aren't in any guidebook photo. Has anyone else found that direct sunlight kills the chance to spot ancient paint, or do you have a better trick for catching it?

Wait till the light gets low. Early morning or late afternoon is best, pigment pops way better in the shade. Sunlight washes everything out flat.
