Had to pick between preserving a rusted sword or cleaning it up for display

I found an old civil war bayonet at an estate sale in Richmond last month. It was completely crusted in rust and dirt, and I had to decide whether to keep it as is or try to clean it up. I went with cleaning it because I wanted to see the maker's mark on the blade. Used a mix of electrolysis and gentle brushing over two weekends, and it actually revealed a faint stamp from 1863. The downside is the patina is gone now, and some collectors might say I ruined the value. But for me, being able to hold that piece of history and read the name felt worth it. Has anyone else here faced a similar choice with old metal finds?

That thing about the patina being gone hits home. I got a copper kettle from a flea market, half green with age, and spent a whole afternoon polishing it bright and shiny. Looked great in the photos but now it just sits on my shelf like a new pot. Sometimes I wish I'd left it alone.

Feel that regret man, rust never sleeps but patina has soul.
