Spent $300 on a 'professional' tree wound sealant that did more harm than good
I had a big oak on a property in Springfield that got a nasty gash from a storm. The owner was really worried about rot, so I went online and found this fancy sealant that promised to 'heal and protect' the wound. The marketing made it sound like a miracle cure. I bought a whole case for about $300, thinking it was a good investment. After applying it, the bark around the wound started to look worse, almost like it was rotting under the seal. I called a more experienced guy I know, and he told me the sealant trapped moisture and stopped the tree's own natural healing. Now I know most modern advice says to just let the tree compartmentalize on its own. Has anyone else had a bad experience with a specific product like this, or is it better to just leave wounds alone now?

Ugh, that's a classic and expensive lesson. Those sealants are mostly junk science now. They trap moisture and bacteria right against the wood, which is exactly what you don't want. The tree will wall off the damage itself, a process called compartmentalization. For a big gash, the best move is to just clean up any ragged bark with a sharp knife so it's smooth, and then leave it completely alone to dry out. Your friend gave you solid advice. Save your money next time.

Guess I'll go get my money back from the tree.

Saw that exact advice in a gardening book.
