Charged customers for a part I didn't replace and got caught. Never again.
Back in 2019 I had a side gig fixing washers for people off Craigslist. Slow month, rent due, and I was stuck on a Samsung that needed a bearing kit. I quoted the customer for the kit but found a used one at a shop in Tulsa for half. So I installed the used one, pocketed the difference, and wrote the invoice like I bought new. Customer called three weeks later asking about a rattle. I went back, opened it up, and the bearing was fine. But his neighbor was an appliance guy too and he looked at my invoice, found the part number, and called me out right there. I lied to his face. Felt like a total scumbag. I refunded the whole labor cost, about 140 bucks, and told him the truth. He didn't leave a bad review but he never called me again. From then on I take photos of every part box and show the customer before I close the panel. Keeps me honest. Anyone else ever fudge a part price when things got tight?
