Vent: my friend says I have to skip all filler episodes or I'm "watching it wrong"
So my buddy Derek has been on my case for about three weeks now because I'm slowly working through One Piece, and I told him I'm watching every single episode in order, no skipping. He looked at me like I insulted his mom and said the only right way is to use a filler guide and jump straight to the canon stuff. I'm at episode 218 in the Long Ring Long Land arc right now, watching maybe 4 or 5 episodes a night after work, and yeah some of it drags, but I genuinely don't mind it. The weird part is Derek hasn't even finished the show himself, he quit around Dressrosa two years ago, so I don't get why he cares so much how I do it. Last Friday we grabbed burgers at this place off 5th and he brought it up again in front of two other people and I just sat there chewing. I want to know if most of you actually skip filler or if that's just a loud minority being annoying about it. Does skipping ever mess up the story for you later, or is it really safe to jump around like that?
The part about Derek quitting at Dressrosa two years ago made me laugh because I saw a Reddit poll last month where like 70 percent of people said they skip filler, but half of those same people admitted they never even finished the show. So take that for whatever it's worth. I watched all of Long Ring Long Land myself and yeah the Davy Back fights drag, but there's little character stuff in there you miss if you jump around. I actually read somewhere that some later gags and callbacks reference filler moments, so skipping everything isn't as clean as people act like it is. Your buddy is basically telling you how to eat a meal he walked away from halfway through. Watch your 4 or 5 episodes a night and enjoy it.
